This gorgeous car predates the Citroën CX by seven years. One wonders how BMC may have fared had they the courage to put this beauty into production. The Austin 1800 was developed at BMC as a larger follow-up to the successful Mini and Austin 1100 under the ADO17 codename, ADO being an abbreviation for Amalgamated Drawing Office. Additional badge-engineered Morris 1800 and Wolseley 18/85 variants were launched in 1966 and 1967 respectively, catering for the BMC dealerships selling those marques.

The ADO 16, to give this range its official BMC name, was never a particularly big seller in Britain due to being too expensive to compete against the Ford Cortina and BMC Farinas, and the 1800 engine was too small to compete against Rover and Triumph. Also it was blighted by its weird styling, bus like driving environment and heavy steering.
